Grammar and Vocabulary Games for Children
by Kathi Wyldeck
This is the American edition of 'Grammar and Vocabulary Games for Children'. It is a resource book for teachers and home-schooling parents who want to make their children’s grammar and vocabulary lessons fun. Grammar, punctuation, phonics, vocabulary and proverbs are all presented in the form of fifty active games. At the end of a formal lesson, these activities can be given as a reward for hard work, or to reinforce the topic just studied. For restless children who need to stretch their legs and let off steam before they knuckle down to further work, the games presented in this book provide the perfect solution. Several of the vocabulary games are designed to help ESL students to practice their new words, and all the games encourage children to listen, concentrate and stay focused on the topic of study. The activities are aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 13 years. Grammar lessons and vocabulary building will never be boring when children are offered the games in this book.

The Decay of the West...Portrayed in Letters
by Kathi Wyldeck
This collection of letters includes Kathi's correspondence with family, friends, politicians and others, and expresses her views on life from the late 1990's and onwards. She is particularly concerned with the declining standards of school education, the move from a policy of assimilation and integration of migrants to that of multiculturalism, and the unscientific and manipulative spread of politically-motivated environmentalism around the world. She believes that the West is in decline, and that unless we are very careful, we risk losing our high standard of living, our democracy and freedom, our productive, free-enterprise economy, and our prominent position in world affairs. Kathi regards herself as an unorthodox conservative, and believes that most readers will find common ground with many of the opinions expressed in the book.

Kathi Decided To Share With All Of Us On Books In Sync Some Fun Games from her book 'Games for Fun, Fitness and Learning' Below are just a few samples of the fun packed into Kathi's books.
|
Contour Diagrams Age Range: All age groups
Materials: Contour map of the local area for the Leader. Paper and pencil per player.
Directions: Before playing this game, teach the players about how contour maps are constructed, with contour lines representing changes in height. Then take the players to an elevated spot where they can view the area shown on the Leader’s map, but do not show the map at this stage. Sit the children so they can look out over the scenery and give them each a pencil and piece of paper. Point out the hills, the rivers, the flat ground, the cliffs, and any other interesting feature such as a railroad track or power lines. Ask the players to try to draw their own contour map of the scene in front of them. When they have finished, show the children the genuine contour map of the area, and let the players see how well they have managed with their own map. Again, point out the real scenery and show where it is on the map.
|
Fish in the Sea Age Range: 7 to 10 year olds
Materials: Chalk
Directions: Stand all but one of the players around the playground, and ask each one to draw a circle around himself with some chalk. Give each player the name of a fish or other sea creature. The player without a circle around him is the Fisherman. He runs around, calling out the names of the various fish, as he pleases, and those called out follow him, copying the actions he does with his hands, as in the game "Follow the Leader". When the Fisherman calls out "The sea is rough!" he and all the fish following him must rush to a chalk circle. Whoever misses out on a place becomes the next Fisherman. Continue to play as long as the players are enjoying themselves.
|
Lost in the Forest Age Range: 7 to 10 year olds
Materials: Pieces of paper, with a different animal name on each one, hidden outdoors in various places-1 animal per player.
Directions: Send the players out to find one lost animal each. When a player finds one, he puts the animal name in his pocket, doesn't tell anyone what it is, and quietly returns to the start. When all the players are back, sit them in a circle and let them take turns to describe what they have found, giving clues to allow the others to guess what the animal is. e.g.) I have scales, I can do a “death roll”, I have sharp teeth, I look like a log = Crocodile.
|
Good to Eat Age Range: 7 to 10 year olds
Materials: 1 ball or beanbag
Directions: Stand the players on the Games Circle with the Leader in the center holding the ball (beanbag). The Leader calls out a letter of the alphabet and throws the ball to a player. The player must think of a healthy food or drink that starts with that letter. When he gets it right, the player calls out another letter and throws the ball to the player of his choice. Let the ball pass from player to player, making sure that the players throw it to a new person each time, so that everyone has a go.
|
MATH GAMES:
Clocks
Age Range: 7 to 10 year olds
Materials: Chalk
Directions: This game needs thirteen players per clock. Leaders can occupy any empty places on the clock face, if there are not quite enough players. For each clock that is playing, draw a Games Circle on the floor, and place numbers one to twelve as they appear on the clock. Also place a spot in the center of the clock where the hands go. Stand the players on the clock face at each hour, with a Leader or player standing in the center spot. Then the Leader calls out a time. Start with easy times at first, such as 3 o'clock. The players standing on the appropriate numbers must then run to swap places, while the person on the center point must try to grab one of their places before one of the two others gets there. e.g.) For 3 o'clock, the players at number 3 and number 12 must swap places. If they swap without the center person grabbing a place, the game continues with a new time called out, and the same center person must try a second time. If, however, the center person succeeds in grabbing a place on the clock face, the loser takes his place in the central position. As the game progresses, call out half pasts, quarter to’s and quarter pasts, and then move on to five, ten, twenty and twenty five minutes to and past. (Many children cannot read an analog clock these days, so it may be a good idea to check first and give a quick revision of time-telling, if some are not sure). Make sure everyone has a go. The younger or less able children should be given easier times than the older or more able children.
12.15 means that players at 12 and 3 must swap places.

Noun Warfare!
Age Range: 8 to 12 year olds
Materials: Leader’s list of common and abstract nouns.
Directions: Remind the players of the four different types of nouns: common, proper, collective and abstract. Make sure the children know that a common noun is the name of something that can be seen or touched, whereas an abstract noun is the name of something that is not seen or touched, but is a feeling or idea.
Now split the group into two teams. One team is the Common Nouns and the other is the Abstract Nouns. Stand the teams against the walls at opposite ends of the room. Tell them that the wall behind them is their Home Base. Explain that when you call out a word, the players must decide whether it is a common noun, an abstract noun, or not a noun at all. If the word is a common noun, then the Common Noun team can take one step forwards. If the word is an abstract noun, the Abstract Nouns can move forwards one step, and if the word is not a noun at all, the players must stay still. If a player moves when he shouldn’t have, that player must join the other team. As the game progresses, the Commons and the Abstracts will get closer and closer together. When the teams are only two yards apart, call out “Attack!” and the Common Nouns must chase the Abstract Nouns and try to catch them before they get back to their Home Base. Any Abstract Nouns that are caught must join the Common Noun team. Repeat the game, but this time, tell the Abstract Nouns that when you call out “Attack!”, it will be their turn to chase the Common Nouns back to Home Base. Keep playing the game for as long as the children are enjoying it. Examples of Common Nouns, Abstract Nouns and Non-Nouns could be:-
Common Abstract Non-Noun
apple, chair, jet beauty, rage through, she
horse, carpet, car anger, headache the, speak, to
pencil, hospital fear, kindness and, because
pillow, tomato education, love but, under, them

Story#1 Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night
Pointing to the time line, tell the children that in the early 1600's there was a king called James I. During his time on the throne, there was a gang of men who hated the king and his parliament and wanted to blow them all up. One of these men was Guy Fawkes. The gang had stacked a large amount of gunpowder under the floor of Parliament House, and Guy and his men were just about to blow the place up, when they were caught red-handed. As a punishment for their crime, they were tortured, hanged, drawn and quartered. On “Bonfire Night” in Britain, “Guy” is burnt on the bonfire and fireworks are let off to remember the Gunpowder Plot, Guy Fawkes and the sparks that would have flown, had he and his men succeeded with their evil plan.
Game#1 Blowing Up Parliament!
Age Range: All age groups
Materials: 1 stick of dynamite (roll of cardboard covered in red paper, with a white piece of string hanging out one end as a wick. Tip of string painted red to show that it is lit!)
Directions: The players sit on the Games Circle and represent the Parliamentarians. Choose one player to be King James I and sit him in the center of the circle. Choose one more player as Guy Fawkes and ask him to take his shoes off but keep his socks on. Give him the “dynamite” and send him to stand quietly at the edge of the room. Dim the lights and tell everyone to keep very quiet. The King and his Parliamentarians must shut their eyes and lower their heads, while Guy tries to stalk into the circle and place the dynamite on the floor behind the King's back without being heard by him. The Parliamentarians are not allowed to warn the King that Guy has entered the circle. If Guy succeeds, he has won. If the King hears him, before the dynamite touches the floor, Guy gets hanged! Repeat with other players, changing the King and Guy Fawkes each time.
|
|
Which Plate? Age Range: 7-12 year olds
Materials: Nil
Directions: Ask the players to lie down on the floor and tell them that they are all Tectonic Plates lying on the Earth's surface. Choose one child to be the Geologist, ask him to look carefully at where the Tectonic Plates are located, and then send him out of the room, while you select one Plate to move to another spot on the floor. When the Geologist is called back in, he has two guesses to work out which Plate has moved. Let a few players take turns being the Geologist, and repeat the game for as long as the players are having fun.
Beat the Lava! Age Range: 7-12 year olds
Materials: Leader’s whistle, chalk
Directions: Draw a Games Circle on the floor with chalk. Tell the children that they live in a village at the foot of a big volcano, and explain that every night, when they go to sleep, they wonder if they will be able to escape in time, if the volcano erupts. Ask each player to place his hat, sweatshirt, belt, shoes and socks (or whatever pieces of clothing all the children are wearing), in neat, individual piles, along the long side of the room. Then tell the players to lie on the opposite side of the room and "go to sleep". Explain that in the "middle of the night", the Leader will call out "Wake up! The lava is approaching!" and the players must quickly stand up, dress in their own clothes and run to the "high ground" (the Games Circle), before the lava reaches them (the whistle blows). Those not on the Circle, in their own clothes, when the whistle blows, are buried alive in the lava!
